Esophageal cancer awareness and help with evaluation costs 💗

In memory of my dad

Last year, I lost my dad to esophageal cancer. Just months earlier, he had been told he was healthy. Our family was left facing a diagnosis we never saw coming and a loss that changed our lives.

I want more people to know about this cancer, understand which symptoms deserve attention, and feel comfortable asking questions when something does not feel right. I also know the cost of medical care can make that first appointment feel out of reach.

Through Pink Fam Foundation, I want to honor my dad by sharing information and, as funding allows, helping people afford the evaluation their healthcare professional recommends.

About esophageal cancer

The esophagus is the tube that carries food and liquids from the throat to the stomach. Esophageal cancer develops when cells in this tube grow out of control. It may cause no symptoms early on, which makes awareness and attention to changes in your health important.

Symptoms that deserve attention

Swallowing feels difficult or painful.

Food seems to stick in your throat or chest when you eat.

You lose weight without intending to.

Heartburn or indigestion is new, worsening, or keeps coming back.

A cough or change in your voice persists.

You repeatedly vomit after meals or have ongoing discomfort behind your breastbone.

These symptoms often have causes other than cancer. A healthcare professional can investigate the cause. Trouble swallowing deserves prompt medical attention. If symptoms persist or worsen, follow up even if a recent checkup was reassuring. [2, 3]

Seek emergency care if you cannot swallow or food is stuck. Call 911 if you are having trouble breathing. Do not wait for a foundation response. [6]

What an evaluation may involve

Your clinician will review your symptoms and health history and may refer you to a gastroenterologist, a specialist in digestive health. Testing may include an upper endoscopy, which uses a thin camera to examine the esophagus. Small tissue samples called biopsies may be taken to check for cancer. Your clinician decides which tests are appropriate. [4, 5]

Screening and symptom evaluation

Screening looks for disease before symptoms appear. Routine esophageal cancer screening is not recommended for people at average risk who have no symptoms. Some people at higher risk, including those with Barrett's esophagus, may need monitoring recommended by their clinician. If you already have symptoms, ask about a diagnostic evaluation. [5,7]

You can ask your clinician: "Do these symptoms need further evaluation, and should I see a gastroenterologist?"

Assistance and donation sections

Request help with evaluation costs

If you have symptoms that need checking, or a clinician has recommended testing, and cost is making it difficult to move forward, you can request help from Pink Fam Foundation.

During our October campaign, we will review requests for financial assistance with clinician-recommended visits or tests related to esophageal health. You can submit an initial request even if you have not yet been able to see a clinician.

Depending on available funds and the approved request, support may help cover part or all of a medical visit, specialist consultation, or recommended testing. A licensed healthcare professional determines appropriate care. Pink Fam Foundation does not diagnose cancer or order medical tests.

Assistance depends on review, available funds, and provider coordination. Submitting a request does not guarantee approval or full payment. We will confirm any approved amount, covered services, and payment arrangements with you before support is provided. Costs incurred before written approval may not be covered.

Please do not delay medical care while waiting for a funding decision.

Before you submit

Use this form to share basic contact information and the type of help you are seeking. Please do not include Social Security numbers, full birth dates, insurance identification numbers, medical records, test results, or a detailed medical history.

If you are contacting us for someone else, get their permission and use your own contact information. Leave their medical details out of this initial form. Our team may follow up about the information needed to review your request and how to provide it.

This form is not monitored for emergencies. Submitting it does not book an appointment or replace medical care.

Your information

We use the information you provide to review your request and contact you about possible assistance. We will ask for your permission before requesting records from a clinic. Sharing a story or photo publicly requires separate permission and is optional; it will not affect consideration for assistance.

Help someone take the next step

The cost of a medical visit or test can be a real barrier to getting symptoms checked. Help Pink Fam Foundation raise funds for clinician-recommended esophageal evaluations and testing, while bringing more attention to this cancer. Every gift helps us build the resources to consider more requests.

Honoring my dad by helping others seek answers.

This October, Pink Fam Foundation is raising awareness about esophageal cancer and working to reduce the cost barriers that can keep people from getting symptoms checked. Learn the warning signs, talk with a healthcare professional, and request financial help with a recommended evaluation or testing.
Tell us how to reach you and what kind of help you need. You do not need a cancer diagnosis to submit an initial request.
